The Ultimate In-Law Suite

Written by Twin Oaks Hollister | Oct 22, 2024 8:17:52 PM

As the holiday season approaches, many look forward to reconnecting with loved ones. The pandemic profoundly changed how we live, deepening our appreciation for family and our time together. In one of the unexpected upsides of the past few years, many extended families discovered the benefits of multi-generational living, creating stronger bonds and shared experiences.

In the past few years, accessory dwelling units (ADUs, or “in-law units”) have become hot properties. One Bay Area architect reports that close to 50% of residential clients want to include ADUs in their remodels and new construction.

But is it the right solution for a relative who wants to age in place, near family? Not surprisingly, household members sometimes find it hard to maintain comfortable boundaries when homes sit on the same property. Not every adult who’d like their senior parent closer wants to be mere steps from their parent or in-law. (And not every parent embraces the idea, either).

Here at Twin Oaks, we’ve identified an interesting trend in people who are interested in our homes. But they’re not moving to Twin Oaks Hollister at all. Their parent is. Southern Santa Clara County and San Benito County include several growing communities that attract young families, and these busy parents have figured out that the ultimate in-law unit isn’t on their property at all--but it’s close by. And that’s just how everyone likes it.

While the vast majority of seniors choose to age in place in their own homes, their housing needs evolve. Many parents that end up solo, particularly women, find their desire for more social opportunities increases--something that’s not always convenient living alone in a traditional neighborhood.

But sprawling, isolated, 55+ developments can likewise feel monotonous and “pre-fab” to some older adults, who’d prefer to be part of a community with history and roots. Better still, new research on aging shows that living in an area with age diversity (Hollister’s median age group is mid-30s) can play an important role in healthy longevity.

Twin Oaks offers the best of both worlds – it’s a boutique active adult community with just 168 homes, nestled in a welcoming Central Coast town with independent businesses, family-owned restaurants, and small-town warmth. San Benito County also provides unique opportunities to volunteer and give back to its many community organizations.

There are several reasons the Twin Oaks formula works for today’s extended families:

  • Single-level, bright, open-plan designs aren’t just pleasing to the eye, they’re practical for anyone who wants to age in place. Our five smart-sized floorplans offer optimal accessibility and ease. No need to hassle with retrofitting an existing home.

  • The location is convenient to family-oriented communities like Gilroy, San Martin, Morgan Hill, and of course Hollister itself.

  • The lifestyle is ideal for a single older adult. From fitness programming to food and wine tasting, from social events to creative classes and clubs, Twin Oaks offers instant community. And we won’t just provide amenities, we have dedicated staff to curate events, outings, and classes. We’ve already seen warm and vibrant connections forming among our Members.

  • Guests (including grandkids) are welcome to visit. Homes feature the practical “split floorplan” that separates the master suite from the guest bedroom for privacy when having overnight visitors. We’ve designed our Cannery Club with pickleball courts, bocce ball courts, and a resort pool that will enable active visits with the grands. And, at just 15 minutes from Henry Coe State Park, 30 minutes from Pinnacles National Park, and the beaches of Monterey Bay, there’s lots of family fun nearby.

  • A small-town lifestyle. Our residents who move from the bustle of the Bay Area love that Hollister is still a small town with an agricultural heritage, hometown businesses instead of usual-suspects chain stores, and a deep sense of community.
