At Twin Oaks Hollister, community involvement is about more than gathering with neighbors—it's about finding meaningful ways to give back. This October, three generous Twin Oaks women and their friends organized “Lil Books, Big Dreams,” a children's book drive inspired by Dolly Parton's commitment to childhood literacy through her Imagination Library. Hosted around the welcoming spirit of The Cannery Club, the event celebrated Southern hospitality, lifelong learning, and the power of a community coming together to make a difference for local children.

Dolly Parton’s father was unable to read and write, leading her to take up the cause of children’s literacy. In 1995, she started the Imagination Library for children within her own Tennessee county. Today, per the organization’s website, the famous program spans five countries and gives millions of free books each month to children around the world.

The idea for “Lil Books, Big Dreams” was to bring Cannery Club members together for an evening that paired homemade Southern cooking with a shared purpose: bringing the joy of reading to local children this holiday season.

#### **A Month of Preparation, An Evening to Remember**

For an entire month, the Southern Belles and their friends shopped, planned, decorated, and prepared homemade Southern dishes. From appetizers through dinner and dessert, their contributions shaped a Dolly-inspired experience that welcomed members with both warmth and purpose. The Cannery Club’s “Paint it Pink” theme for October, in honor of Breast Cancel Awareness, was carried through the event’s fun, flamboyant decor.

Such heartfelt hospitality takes time, care, and considerable work. The event reflected all three, offering members an opportunity to enjoy a delicious meal, spend time with friends, and contribute to something meaningful beyond their own community.

#### **Sharing the Joy of Reading**

Cannery Club members embraced the book drive with generosity of their own, donating new children’s books for local children. Each contribution helped advance the simple idea at the center of the celebration: a book can give a child something to enjoy today that may also inspire new dreams for tomorrow.

Dolly Parton’s example provided the inspiration, while members made the effort their own. Their gifts connected a convivial evening at the Club with the prospect of stories, discovery, and imagination for children this holiday season.

#### **Community Involvement: The People Who Make Twin Oaks Hollister Special**

Gatherings like this reveal how a community develops its character. Someone brings an idea, others offer their talents, and friends embrace a reason to come together. At Twin Oaks, the Southern Belles and their friends put that spirit into practice.Their new nickname feels right, speaking to their generosity, their love of tradition and togetherness, and their ability to make people feel welcome and appreciated.

To the Southern Belles, the friends who worked alongside them, and every Twin Oaks member and guest who donated a book, thank you. You gave your time, shared your talents, and helped extend the warmth of The Cannery Club to children beyond its doors.

At Twin Oaks Hollister, community is built through meaningful connections, shared experiences, and opportunities to give back. The Southern Belles, their friends, and the Cannery Club members who supported “Lil Books, Big Dreams” demonstrated how a simple act of generosity can make a lasting difference. Their children's book drive is a reminder that the best active adult communities offer more than beautiful homes and amenities—they create opportunities for friendship, purpose, and connection with the broader Hollister community.
